The .vn extension family, explained

Vietnam's country-code space is layered rather than flat. Understanding the layers takes five minutes and prevents the most common mis-purchase in the market: buying a name in a sub-space that says something about you which is not true.

Second-level: name.vn

The shortest and the scarcest. Registering directly under .vn was opened later than the third-level options, which means the obvious words were contested heavily when it arrived. It reads as modern and confident, it is the shortest local address available, and in the aftermarket it consistently carries the highest prices of any .vn variant.

There is no eligibility distinction that makes it better or worse as a trust signal than .com.vn. The premium is scarcity and brevity, nothing more.

Commercial third-level: name.com.vn

The workhorse. This is what most Vietnamese businesses hold and what most Vietnamese users expect from a company address. It is longer, which costs it points aesthetically, and it is more widely available, which costs it points in the aftermarket. As a signal of a legitimate registered business it does exactly the same job as the second level.

If your name is available at both levels, buy both and serve one. If it is available at only one, availability has made the decision and it is not worth agonising over.

Technical and organisational variants

The network variant is intended for infrastructure and service providers; the organisational one for associations, foundations and non-commercial bodies. Both are usable by ordinary registrants at most registrars, but both carry an implication. A trading company on an organisational address is making a small claim about itself that is not accurate, and attentive customers notice.

Their aftermarket value tracks the implication. A strong word in the organisational variant is worth a fraction of the same word in the commercial one, because the pool of buyers who can use it honestly is much smaller.

Restricted institutional variants

Educational, governmental and similar sub-spaces are restricted to registrants who qualify, and the qualification is checked. They are not investment inventory. Their value is entirely to the institutions entitled to use them, and the buyer pool is therefore tiny and specific.

That does not make them worthless — a well-chosen educational name is genuinely valuable to a school or training provider. It makes them illiquid. Price accordingly and expect long holding periods.

Geographic variants

Province and city names exist as a further layer. They are occasionally useful for a business that is genuinely local and wants to say so, and they are almost never worth holding speculatively: the addressable buyer for a province-level address is one business in one province, which is the narrowest market this space produces.

How to choose

Work backwards from the sentence you want a stranger to read. If it is “this is a real Vietnamese company”, the second level or the commercial third level both say it, and you pick on availability and length. If it is “this is a school” or “this is a trade association”, use the matching variant and make sure the claim is true. If it is “this is an international business”, you wanted the generic extension and should read the comparison in the Vietnam Domain Market section instead.

And keep the total manageable. Registering a name across six variants to prevent imitation is an expensive habit with modest returns; two well-chosen addresses defended properly beat six held carelessly. The Legal & Trademarks section covers when defensive registration is actually justified.
